Wesley K. Banda

Engineer, Pyrometallurgy Division, Mintek

Wesley Banda Wesley has worked for three years as an engineer in the process demonstration section of the Pyrometallurgy Division at Mintek. He holds a BSc(Eng) degree in chemical engineering from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, and is currently completing his MSc(Eng) in metallurgy at Wits University, titled 'Chemical wear of carbon and silicon carbide based refractory material by silicomanganese metal'. Wesley is registered as a candidate engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). His main research interests are in process development and demonstration from laboratory to pilot scale, with focus areas in zero waste, which involves reusing industrial waste to achieve an added-value product; using DC arc technology; refractories; and manganese- and silicon-based alloys.

Wesley is a past secretary (2016-2018) and member (2015 to date) of the Young Professionals’ Council (YPC) of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). He currently chairs the Mintek’s Professional Association (MinPASS), which is an in-house initiative promoting career growth and knowledge transfer between fellow employees.

In his spare time, he volunteers at Mofolo parkrun as the Event Director.
