Masud A. Abdellatif

Specialist, Pyrometallurgy Division, Mintek

Masud Abdellatif holds a BSc degree in chemical engineering and an MSc and PhD in metallurgical engineering from the University of Idaho, USA. He joined Mintek's Pyrometallurgy Division in July 1993. Since then, he has been managing various research and development projects including:

Pilot-plant demonstration of the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process
Smelting of nickel oxide concentrate in a DC arc furnace, and the production of a utility metal containing > 95% Ni
Involvement in laterite smelting in a 3 MW DC arc pilot plant
Development of a process for the treatment of EAF dust and the recovery of zinc in a DC-arc furnace (200kVA to 5.6 MVA)
Involvement in the development of a process to produce a crude stainless steel from stainless steel dust in a DC-arc furnace
Development of a process to produce ferrovanadium from vanadium slags and flyash generated in power stations
Design, construction, and operation of a plasma-heated cyclone furnace for the production of pig iron from magnetic iron concentrates
Involvement in the application of DC arc furnaces in the direct production of carbides and diborides of titanium and zirconium from ilmenite and zircon minerals
Development of a process for the treatment of drosses generated in a lead splash condenser

His current research interests include alternative process routes for titanium metal production, optimization of Mintek's thermal magnesium process, and the smelting of particulate feedstock in a flame cyclone furnace.

His publications to date, for which he has been an author or co-author, include 24 papers, two patents, 15 internal reports, and 27 external contract reports.
